faq - Spring 2015
Why is DBMS limiting the number of athletes in the varsity and novice programs?
Due to an increase in the athletes wishing to join our team, and the finite limitations and safety risks of rowing on the bay, we have no choice but to place a limit on the number of rowers we can accommodate in our program. To allow an unlimited number of participants would lead to a serious degradation in the quality of our program, and expose both the club and the rowers to potential safety risks.
What has changed about the try-out process?
All teams, Novice/Varsity and Men/Women, will go through a try-out process at the beginning of the season. The varsity tryouts will take place from March 16-20, 2015. Novice tryouts will take place from March 23-27, 2015. The target total for the entire DBMS Crew team is 62 rowers and coxswains.
How will the athletes be evaluated?
Try-outs will take into account all of the aspects that allow a rower to be successful. Attributes the coaches will consider include; fitness level, strength-to-size ratio, technical ability, coach-ability, leadership, competitiveness, teamwork, attendance, positive attitude, sportsmanship, and general athletic potential.
We encourage all Duxbury High School students of all sizes and abilities to try-out. The selection process will be managed entirely by the DBMS coaching staff in a very objective manner.
Are coxswains also affected by the change?
Coxswains will be held to the same standards as rowers. Persons trying out as coxswains should understand leadership is inherent in the role and that weight and height are important considerations
How will the athletes be notified of the results of the try-outs?
Selections for the varsity teams will be posted in the erg room on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at noon. Selections for the novice team will be posted on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at noon.
If an athlete is not selected for a team, may they tryout again at a later date?
Yes, all competitively selected boats are fluid in nature due to changes in the capabilities of the athletes in the program. Any person wanting to retry for a competitive program is best served by remaining in one of the noncompetitive rowing programs during the same season, as long as DBMS has the capacity to run said program. There will be tryout sessions for both the fall and spring seasons.
Has the price per season changed?
Yes. Due to increased program operating costs, the change to fewer athletes, and an increase in the number of coaches DBMS will be raising the fees. With this in mind, we have engaged in strong fundraising efforts to keep our budget balanced as we have growing demands for equipment and coaches.
How is DBMS Crew affected by becoming part of the Duxbury High School sports?
The main benefit of DBMS Crew becoming a DHS varsity sport is “notoriety”. The team will now be recognized within the high school athletic department for their accomplishments throughout the spring season. Those athletes that qualify will also be eligible for a varsity letter. Additionally, DBMS Crew members will now be allowed access to the athletic trainer and the DHS weight room.
There will not be an extra DHS athletics fee to any DBMS Crew member. However, those interested in trying out for the team MUST register with the high school before the first day of tryouts.
Will the DBMS Crew uniforms be changing?
Yes. Fortunately, we do not have to have separate spring uniforms since we are now a part of the high school. However, we will have new uniforms for the 2015 spring season.
I have further questions.
